CG Lawyers understands that privacy is important to you, and is committed to complying with the National Privacy Principles (NPPs), which are contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act).

1.What Personal Information does CG Lawyers collect?

The types of personal information that CG Lawyers collects will depend on the nature of your dealings with us. We may collect personal information from you when you:

If you are a client, the personal information we will collect from you will usually include your name, title, business address and email address and contact numbers (telephone, facsimile, mobile). If necessary for the purposes of providing advice to you, or for providing you with other information (such as email updates) sometimes we may collect other personal information from you. However, we do not collect personal information that we do not need. If you are one of CG Lawyers' business contacts we may collect basic business contact information from you (e.g. our name, title and work contact details).

Generally CG Lawyers will not ask to collect sensitive information about you unless it is needed for the purposes of providing legal advice, or unless it is required by law.

2.How does CG Lawyers use Personal Information?

We need to collect personal information so that we can provide our products and services, and conduct our business. We also collect personal information so that we can communicate new legal or firm developments to our clients and other contacts.

3.Will your Personal Information be given to anyone else?

Personal information may be disclosed outside CG Lawyers as described below:

(a) Disclosures to external service providers, such as photocopying and archiving services, clerical services, barristers, expert witnesses and to our consultant trade mark searchers.

(b) If CG Lawyers engages external providers including service providers located overseas, CG Lawyers takes steps to ensure that those external service providers:

  1. comply with the NPPs when they handle personal information about you;
  2. are authorised only to use personal information for the limited purposes specified in our agreement with them;

and your consent to any such disclosures is implied in your retaining of CG Lawyers to act on your behalf.

(c) Disclosure required or permitted by law

Otherwise, CG Lawyers will only disclose personal information if this is required by law or permitted under the Privacy Act. CG Lawyers is also bound by professional obligations of confidentiality, including in relation to personal information.

4.Security of Personal Information

CG takes reasonable steps to ensure the security of your personal information. Our IT systems are password protected. We update our anti-virus software regularly.

5.Access and Correction

Under the Privacy Act, you have the right to seek access to your personal information handled by CG Lawyers. You also have the right to ask us to update or correct your personal information when it is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date.

If you wish to access the personal information that CG Lawyers holds about you, please set out your request in writing, and forward this to Cara Ghassemian (at cara.ghassemian@cglawyers.com.au).

For legal and administrative reasons, CG Lawyers may also archive non-current records containing personal information, such as back up data files and in offsite storage.

6.Online Privacy Issues

As noted above, sometimes we collect personal information through our web site. You will see what this information is when you fill in the fields of the online forms.

From time to time we might also use cookies. Cookies can allow us to identify visitors and we may use this information to evaluate our website's performance and in reviewing the services that we offer.

Our web site contains links to other websites, for your convenience and information. When you access a web site other than www.cglawyers.com.au please understand that CG Lawyers is not responsible for the privacy practices of that site.
